Ronan's report

Thursday 9th September, 2010

Boy am l enjoying these cool nights and early mornings, to say the least 100f days have been the shits.

Whilst driving to the dam couple of days ago could not help notice this cool scene of the sun rising over the White river valley, hence the two pics here. Not as yet close to lower fall temps here at this time but they are on the way. Right now we are expecting some severe rain falls, we need rain, but not again at flood stage levels, two years of that is just about enough.

Aside from that the river is in great shape and so are the fish. Seems like they are eager to take from the bottom to the surface, which has been great so far as top dry techniques this year, in fact one of the best for a very long time so far as fishing hoppers, ants and terrestrial bugs.

Last week l made reference to a few new fly patterns that have been killer for me this season, one of which is shown here, nothing real special, white marabou tail, body is a hares ear blend, hackle olive grizzled with a brown partridge head would, other options are with or without a bead head. Hook sizes from 10 to 14.

Now is it not strange and l know many of you will concur with this that for each year there seems to be a particular fly that is the one to go too, l wonder why. For the same water and in many cases the same fish.

I well remember the days when the baby doll ruled, every place you fished the cry would go around, what you catch with, baby doll, no doubt that fly killed 1000s of trout, at least for stillwater applications, but l also know it worked when fished on moving water systems.

Some will argue that if the same fly is used often the fish will wise up, and l would agree with that for that has also been my experience. I have many times watched how fish react and l am convinced there is a great deal of truth to this argument, I would also add that my further belief is how flies are presented, no matter if it be dead drift nymphs under a indicator, a hopper dry nymph rig, stripped lures and streamers and so on.

We all know the same issue can take place at times when a given species is emerging, may be chironomids, mayfly, is there a answer to this, l guess there are only two at the end of the day.

The fish simply do not like the fly or what you now fish you do so with utter confidence, aside from the other issues related to presentation. Is there always a better fly that the one you have confidence with, very likely. On the other hand we do know that under given prevailing conditions there are flies that will likely work, but by what percentage of the fish that see it do we catch. ? we will never know that answer.

There are definite changes year to year, no doubt of that, and for many reasons, way too many to discuss here, no matter the answer is to figure it out, which unless you are able to fish regularly may be a problem, unless you are able to gain the update info from another source, or the word is out.

Often as not it is the introduction of a new fly pattern you innovated or one you have not used before that is the answer, be that you tie it or buy it.

Fly fishing is a ever growing personal interest that at times simply boggles your mind, on the other hand l also believe we humans over analyze what really are simple solutions, or are they !!!!

Tight lines all.
