Ronan's report

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

So here's how you can prepare. Build a platform about 50 ft up the spindliest tree you can find. Build a sturdy handrail around it, you'll see why in a minute.

Climb up into the platform with your tarpon rod, an intermediate line and a cinderblock. Tie your tippet to the cinderblock. I suggest 40 or 50 lb.

Now imagine that you've just spotted the school and cast as far as you can. Given that you can barely stand up on your wobbly platform this won't be very far at all. Bonus points if any loose line that you aren't standing on has been wrapped around your head by the wind.

Wait a few seconds to simulate the line sinking 10 or 15ft and now strip line as fast as you can. You'd better be watching your hands right about now or you won't be fast enough.

Now imagine that the line has just stopped dead, strip strike!!!!! Once you've gotten your line back on the reel the real fun begins.

With your line tight to the reel I want you to kick the cinderblock off of the edge of the platform. If it hits the ground, start over.

If you've managed to stop the block from crashing to the ground then now you get to pump it back up to the platform. If you ignored my advice and brought a 9 or a 10 wt rod you will be a sad panda right about now. Hell, my 11 wt broke on the first run on a real fish (got it though). If you brought enough rod and brought your lump of concrete back to the platform, congratulations, you've just completed Rob's Bluewater Permit Fishing Simulation.

If you don't think that's flyfishing then you hate fun.

I can't wait to do it again!!!

I don't know about you, but I'm ready to give it a try! Preferably with live permit and not a cinderblock. Nice FP Rob.
