I have walked by a pile of shot gun shells that were on the side a river, at least 10 times, it bugged me every time, my self talk was “Damn you forgot the bag again” “Shit that is ugly, why don’t pick them up”!!!! Well that bit of self talk got to me, as good self talk should and I brought a bag with me Monday, it helped that my wife put a bag on the counter for my lunch, it was not needed for the lunch, but it triggered the thought to pick up the shells.


I got to my parking spot and really took my time getting set up enjoying the time and the day. Wow I slowed down! This reflective me is not me! I put the bag in the top of my waders and when I came to the shells I leaned my gear against a tree and got to work, it only took a few minutes and the spot was clean.


I counted as I picked up the shells 187 spent shells and 1 live round. I am sure that if there was somebody looking at me from across the river it would have been a weird sight - a grown man on his Knees in waders, a fishing jacket, a wide brimmed hat, glasses on a string around his neck, with a white plastic bag in his hand picking up little red objects as two large dogs milled a round and he mumbled to himself about Effen lazy fools, inconsiderate jelly roll bastards, Knuckle dragging mouth breathing morons etc..


I started to feel sorry for myself as the fish did not want anything to do with me, I could see them raising along the far bank and could get a cast there but could not get the right fly to them, and when the day was winding down, I started to explore, and the light turned to that wonderful soft silky glowing sort of half bright gold colour, I saw a large raise near my bank, I instinctively flipped my streamer to it(I changed to streamers as my drys and emergers where shit!, and was rewarded, then a short time later again rewarded. This is indeed a healthy level of insanity!


I have just finished a three day Career Planning workshop, I will be fishing Fri and Sat, so that I can get my particular level of insanity back! Here are some other ways to maintain or improve your level(s) of Insanity! Remember Egos and Ignorance are a trouts biggest enemy on a river!



To Maintain a Healthy Level of Insanity


1.. At Lunch Time, Sit in Your Parked Car with Sunglasses on and point a Hair Dryer At Passing Cars. See If They Slow Down.


2. Page Yourself Over The Intercom. Don't Disguise Your Voice!


3. Every Time Someone Asks You To Do Something, ask If They Want Fries with that.


4. Put Decaf In The Coffee Maker For 3 Weeks . Once Everyone has Gotten Over Their Caffeine Addictions, Switch to Espresso.


5. In the Memo Field Of All Your Checks, Write ' For Marijuana’.


6. Skip down the hall Rather Than Walk and see how many looks you get.


7. Order a Diet Water whenever you go out to eat, with a serious face.


8. Specify That Your Drive-through Order Is 'To Go'.


9. Sing Along At The Opera.


10. Five Days In Advance, Tell Your Friends You Can't Attend Their Party Because You have a headache.


11.When The Money Comes Out The ATM, Scream 'I Won! I Won!'


12. When Leaving the Zoo, Start Running towards theParking lot, Yelling 'Run For Your Lives! They're Loose!'


13. Tell Your Children Over Dinner, 'Due To The Economy, We Are Going To Have To Let One Of You Go.'


And The Final Way To Keep A Healthy Level Of Insanity




14. PICK UP A BOX OF CONDOMS AT THE PHARMACY, GO TO THE COUNTER AND ASK WHERE THE FITTING ROOM IS.
