Ronan's report

6th of May 2010

This past weekend was the Chinook Waters Fly Fishing Club Conclave. It is a great feeling when a group of people can come together and share a common interest.

Lethbridge is a fairly small city with an agricultural base. While some of the agricultural type may be keen on conservation, the irrigation industry is often in direct conflict with fish. It’s a quite simple equation: more water for crops equals less water for fish. Despite the obvious conflict, many agricultural related folks in Lethbridge are interested not only in fly fishing, but also in conservation. My own background runs to the ranching side of things. Anyways, for a small agricultural city there are quite a few people interested in fly fishing.

The conclave had less people attending this year but felt more like a club event as opposed to a fund raising dinner. The conclave ran demonstrations on how to tie flies on tubes, for pike, for salmon and steelhead, and for trout. Casting was demonstrated by Brian Niska from Whistler, BC. There were excellent presentations by Max R also known as the Bow River Ninja and by Tim B., a local stillwater expert.

Overall, the food was great and the company was awesome! For those of you who are near a club, I’d recommend attending a similar event!

Always keep an open mind,
