Ronan's report

Thursday 22nd April, 2010

I just got off the river after a day of fishing with Ray. What a spectacular day! 20 degrees and sunny in mid April. The water is lower than normal, there is almost no snowpack left, but bugs were out and moving around. Unfortunately there weren’t many fish weren’t more looking up.

The day started with me being half an hour late. 5 in the morning is not an appropriate time to call to let someone know that you are late, but Ray understood (his wife would not have). West towards the mountains, we were at a river shortly after sunrise. Deer, foxes, coyotes, and eagles were plentiful on the drive to the site. It was a little chilly in the morning but a short walk upstream to the first holes warmed the blood.

Midges were in the backeddies, skwalla stoneflies were on the rocks, and even caddis were flying over the water. Streamers got a few hits in the bedrock and boulder ledges, but not what was expected. A shift to small dries didn’t bring anything up. But foam... big easy to see hard to sink foam flies worked. In April!?!

Hours later only a few solid trout had been caught. Maybe there is something to the saying “Wind from the west fishing’s at its best; Wind from the east fishing is the least.” There was a steady wind blowing from the east, which is almost unheard of in Alberta’s southwest. Despite the wind it was still nice enough for me to get a sunburn, which will be hard to explain considering I was “sick”.

If you haven’t yet, check out Sexyloops TV on Youtube. When you are done watching the videos, head over to the Board to discuss everything from flies and flows to mends and casting arcs.

Get out and enjoy the water,
Harps
