Ronan's report

Thursday 7th January, 2010

So... one of my New Years resolutions was to practice casting... last weekends embarrassing round on the river proved that casting is an issue, but my nymphing is worse. A couple of hours on a local tailwater and only six hits that I’m sure were fish. I know the river was recovering from air temperatures below -25 degrees, but the fish were still feeding. The hits were either on the #12 stonefly nymph or the #22 thread midge dropper, but I couldn’t tell. Poor mending, not enough weight, too much weight, too much Didymo, tailing loops, and not watching the indicator; I was a mess on the river! It looks like I really do need practice.

The day was spectacular, fish or no fish. Big deer, golden eagles, great temperatures, and bright sunshine, can’t beat that combination! While we are getting another 10cm of snow right now and the temperature is -20, this weekend we are supposed to get up to 9 degrees above freezing... perfect for another January day on the river.

Careful on the ice,
