Ronan's report

Friday November 13th, 2009

Saved from penury and moral degeneracy as a Jermyn Street Sock Modeller by his appointment to the ZAPPP ltd Communications Department as Chief Lumo-Popham Semaphore Flag and Pennant Sewer, Laurence Furtlesham had reason to be grateful for the security that was now his. The personal rewards afforded by adherence to the company internal operating manuals were, by anyones standards, substantial and there was no need to think too hard about the processes involved in his day to day existence as these were properly prescribed in "The ZAPPP Guide to Solving Everything".

Nevertheless, as he leant against the polished Marauder bar cradling a comforting evening gimlet and watching, with a somewhat nostalgic air, the scuffles around the midweek castoffs at the casting oche, he had a mild but peculiarly disturbing sense of discomfort. Spawned perhaps by some underlying intuition that the life that he had led prior to this, was one to which had been added a hint of that intoxicating spice,.. risk, an unhealthy addiction to which, he had never quite overcome.

Before those dark times when vulnerable, penniless and alone, he had been viciously exploited by unscrupulous mens hosiery peddlers in the backstreets of Mayfair and sent to sell illicit and potentially very harmful socks in the dark alleys off Piccadilly, before then, back in the days of his spring, he had travelled far and lived and worked with the very legends of ZA PPP ltd product field testing. They had fished together and lived and fought in the wildest corners of the planet, perfecting the matchless self jerking rod, advancing the cause of local bankside bakelising and creating the first pioneering pan-continental "Airborne Angler" muleteers blimp services.

These, now almost mythical, early ZA outreach teams had been disbanded in favour of the cold labs many years ago. Many operatives, like him, had drifted into hopelessness and destitution unable to cope with the mundane banalities of urban living. But, a few, just a lucky few, of the individuals that had made these groups so vital, so filled with colour and life, had been woven into the fabric of the organisation.

He knew that his first expedition partner, Prunella Cholmondeley-Pennell still worked in the ZA Boiler Room and Company Crèche and had found her place as leader of the Lady Stokers and Underground Plate Benders Comintern Solidarity Group, though they rarely met. There was the indomitable Jimmy the Wig of course, and there were others still visible but no longer speaking. He had no contact with the Whelpton Pillses but this was hardly unsurprising since Wilf had caught him tampering with the pommel grips of one of Marjories specialist belts on the back bench seat of a converted 1958 ZA Eclodameter Caravette in Outer Margate as they waited for Wilf together during one of his first minor species night time exploratories and things had become slightly overheated.

But perhaps the most personally influential and arguably the most celebrated of the early testers had disappeared from his world completely, his dashing mentor on the unforgettably successful ZA "Varitrunk" stabilising bars andean expedition, a man totally committed to the development of safe temporary camp services for the international angler and in a stellar class of his own as the very acme of ZA latrine testers….WC Briggs.

Laurence took another sip of his gimlet. " I wonder where he is right now" he mused out loud.
