Ronan's report

Monday 27th April, 2009

Had a couple or three "Black Zander" today, here in Hungary. Somewhere along the line we had translation problems, because they were Black Bass. Still it's great to know that there are Black Bass here in Hungary (I knew that already of course). They're not in season at the moment, but we weren't actually fishing for them.

Babus hooked a catfish on her third cast. So it was an exciting afternoon all around. We're busy planning the Scottish Meet and of course beating back the Latohead Jungles with machetes.

That's it from me; I'm hoping one of the other admin has something to add.... Cheers! Paul

Not really! But there's a lot to read in the weekly include below! It's all happening.

Iced-Off and Bloody

The ice was just breaking two weeks ago. The grassy fields that slope down to the water are so soaked with snowmelt that even a stick-thin ballerina would sink up to her tutu. The road still showed signs of a recent open with deadfall sawn and pushed to the sides, and a few wet dips painted some wicked mud flames up the sides of my truck. We slid the canoe off and into the water, then got our ass kicked for several hours.

Not one of those stillwater skunkings where you can't find the fish. We saw them all right; you couldn't miss em. The whole lake was lit with scattered rings, very scattered, intermittent, all over in deeper water. Little fish were jumping clean out. Even some big ones put on the flying dolphin show. We strung up quickly with sly grins thinking we were in for a real ripper of a day, but after an hour in the fly box was already torn apart.

A thin but steady hatch of blood midges were coming off. They're a big orangish chironomid about size 14, not even eager to leave the surface. Shucks nearly an inch long littered the surface. Started with a wet cast, red hook on point, black and silver spider on the dropper, well greased orange Elk Hair on the bob. Not a touch. Greased line nymphs, clothesline holding up brassies, deep setup under an indicator, intermediate line, lifted and dropped on the floater. We pulled a bugger and leach back paddling back to shore. Arrrg! Fly patch was a mess of tippet and flies. Pulled out as shade hit the water, they were still going at it.

Tough day. We should have been able to get it nailed down. Gotta get to work on these things. Bloody midges...

Eric
