Happy New Year to all of you!

Lately I've been tying a lot of flies - my batch of swap-flies are done and ready to ship, I've been tying some foam surfacelures for Paul to use in NZ.

I went through my trout- and graylingboxes to take inventory in order to get ready for the new season. The first thing I noticed was that I was short one of my favourite searching-dries - The Mighty BlackHammer! Obviously, as the name implies, just a colorvariation of Hans van Klinken's famous Klinkhamer! Oliver Edwards calls it the Bluebottle Klinkhamer.

I'm pretty certain the trout and grayling take them for terrestials, but that doesn't change the fact that it works great as a searching fly when the fish aren't really about on the surface. In the small sizes, it's a great midgeimitation.

I started out tying 4 size 10 and ended up tying 23's - 4 of each! It's a lot of flies when you think about :-). I simply leave the tying kit and the materials on the desk and sit down and tie one or two whenever there's 5 minutes to spare. A great way to get some flies in the box. And it saves me keeping the discipline to sit down and tie 30 flies of the same pattern!

If you haven't got any BlackHammers, as I like to call them, in your box - tie some!
