Ronan's report

Wednesday December 3rd, 2008

Not quite Crime and Punishment, but not exactly a comedy either. Get much beyond sharing a few casting tips, and an ego might get squashed beneath those well meaning felt soles (sticky feet for our Kiwi friends).

It takes a lot to hang a cast out there for critisism whether asking a question, posting a video clip, out in the park or on the water. Fish are pretty harsh critics, but we know they're cold-blooded bastards. That's part of the game. Some beginners know they have a ways to go, but don't want it parade it out in front of everyone. Those who've had some success fishing, might not want to show that casting isn't the best part of their game. Salted and weather-hardened old timers who've nothing to prove can get reluctant. Even followers of the loop, working toward the next level, don't always share setbacks or bumps on the road to the perfect cast. Most of the time loopers are just focused on the casting, no matter what level, no matter who's casting, analyzing it. Trying to find a way to improve it. The rest of the time they're thinking about fish, beer, or sex, especially the sisters in the brotherhood. They're the worst.

For those thinking of asking but are feeling a little shy, believe me, you can ask most anything and get a serious answer. At worst, you'll get a few grins.

For others who might be answering here, sharing some help, instructing, try not to forget that our focused sometimes clinical analysis can come across as a little harsh. How would you describe an oversized backcast loop? Straight, wrapped in cotton candy, or straight to the punch?

Over on the PoD today we've got two new trailers released from our friends at TheFlyFishingDVD.com. The first is Threadfin on the Fly which coincidentally popped up on the Board last week. The second is South Island Rivers (New Zealand) which has me pretty jacked up with an impending trip booked! Take a look, it's worth the dime.

Cheers, Eric

Matt's out today, thinking about why he'll never fly again while writing christmas cards for his 5 new minibus car-pooling holiday traveling friends.
