Ronan's report

Sunday November 2nd, 2008

Bhuddachu, Bumcast, and I were sinking a beer and exchanging reports of the day. We had been fishing in sight of one another, but just. We had all done about the same, fish-wise. A couple of fish or three apiece, and several chances missed one way or the other. Good, tough, interesting trout fishing.

For some reason the talk got onto numbers of takes vs converted hook-ups and fish brought it hand. Anyways, after we all say it was just good getting out, even though we didn't get big numbers, Bumcast says," All the serious fishermen I know count fish."

I think we all agreed that, yeah, we probably all do keep track of what we're doing when we're fishing, numbers wise. But I have been thinking about his and I realised that there are plenty of times when I lose track completely. I mean, I know when I'm not catching fish, that's certain, but I've noticed plenty of times when the fishing is good that I just let it go, somewhere along the line.

One of the stock catch phrases (literally) among a lot of guides and anglers in North America recently, is the 'twenty-fish day', as if that's some kind of benchmark for a good one. No doubt, it is, too. Twenty trout, and by that we mean trout that at one time we would probably kill and keep, is a great day. The trouble with phrases like that is a 'twenty-fish day' soon becomes just another goal you have to hit, the kind of thing that decides not only if the fishing is good, but whether you can really fish. A lot of guys are just too scared to admit if they don't catch a shitwack of fish, just in case, you know, the other guy has.

The funny thing is that if the fishing has been tough, and the numbers just aren't there, an anxious bullshitter like that can screw up. When everyone else has been scratching for fish, claims of big numbers look more than a tad suspicious. The expert bullshitter knows enough to hear everyone else out first, but he usually comes out as top rod.

The point is, talking of numbers caught is valuable to get a picture of what is really happening out there on a day. Bullshit is really about dick size.
