Ronan's report

Sunday 29nd June, 2008

So, OK, we all know that, in fly fishing as in most other things, size matters. But it isn’t everything, right?

Take last week, for instance. My bro Billy and I spent a couple days up in the Smoky River country of northern Alberta, looking for grayling. We were pushing things a little, but we had to do something. The southern rivers are only now coming into shape after the spring run-off, and we hoped the northern streams might be fining down a little quicker. They weren’t.

The streams were all high and carrying quite a bit of colour, but we just said what the hell and fished dry flies anyway. We forced a fair number of small Arctic Grayling to rise, sat out an electric storm, and generally had a good time. It was wild bush country, with no trails orsign of human interference once you got on the river. In fact, it looked to me that nobody ever walks more than fifty yards either way of the bridge on most of the streams up there. I came up on a pair of cow elk (wapiti to you Europeans) who had obviously not seen a human for some time, maybe never.

Being a prairie boy, it’s not really my kind of country, mostly because you can’t see beyond the tree tops in any direction, but it’s wild and we found some great looking streams worth another look later in the season. The Arctic Grayling is a nice fly fish too, they suit the country. They’re so graceful and pretty it sort of makes up for all those bogs and mud roads you have to travel through to get to them.
