Ronan's report

Monday May 5th, 2008

I couldn't do it. Couldn't hold out against the onslaught of saltwater posts, photos and stories of heavy tackle fighting heavy fish. 10, 11, 12 weight rods launch 1/0, 2/0, 4/0 flies that bigger than the dinks that nip at the my trout flies. Silhouettes of an angler standing on the bow lay in front of glorious sunrises and sunsets. And of course, lines tighten and tear off the water shooting like lightning bolts into the blue, aqua, and green toward the sudden explosions of water and fish. The anglers frantically dance away from coils of line that vanish out of the rod and make massive reels whirl like pinwheels of knuckle-busting terror.

I cracked and had to see for myself so in T-minus one month, I'll be heading to one of these mythical places to see for myself. I'm sure other naive neophytes who don't have a clue where to get their feet wet will be converging to realize their own visions. Quieter hardened veterans with knowing grins will be looking for that special fish that they missed, lost or otherwise got screwed out of in some mishap of weather or tackle or chance. Still others who've been truely bitten will be there to just get one more dose until they can figure out how to make it permanent or at least stave off the painful withdrawl symptoms.

Lots to do before it happens. Get my tackle all figured out which it is for the most part. Thank Morsie for giving me a clue about rigs and knots and the confidence that goes with it. Practice some more. Grab a giant bottle of SPF4000 suncreen. Then let it all flow, listen to the guide, play hard, fight hard, don't fuck up and try to prove it's all not imaginary.

Cheers, Eric
