Ronan's report

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Midges are abundant in the rivers I fish most of the year, and especially here in April where other insects hatch and direct the attention of the fish towards the surface, they can key in on midges.

"Midge" is a common word used for lots of different "small flies". The ones I'm talking about are the Simuliidae spp, which hatch only in streams in rivers.

It's quite an amazing insect really - nothing spectacular about their life or lifecycle. They feed on cow's blood and it's quite amzing that they sometimes hatch in so massive numbers that they can kill cattle and be a serious threat to humans as well!

As far as I know, no casualties amongst humans due to Simuliidae have been registered. They do bite though and they can be really annoying when fishing.

Fishing is interesting - nothing special about it other than I find it quite a challenge to land fish on the small hooks needed to imitate these bugs. On the subject of imitation them - check out my challenge from last week!

On Tuesday, I'm off to Japan and will try to bring you a frontpage from there, but no guarantees as I'm uncertain about internetaccess!

Lars
