Ronan's report

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

It's that time of year again - or at least it would have been a few years back, but these days I have to wait until April 1st. The rivers that have the best, early spring fishing for trout and grayling, which used to open at March 1st are now closed until April 1st. The reason is the endangered wild, Danish salmon, and I have every respect for the preservarion of a wild salmon stock, but honestly, the parts of the watersystems holding the salmon, have *never* seen a salmon in March.

I digress, because what I really wanted to talk about was season opening, which is April 1st on my favourite early-season rivers! Grayling and trout will be rising (unless waterlevels are unreasonable :-), to LDO's, small stones, Bibio a little later in April, and effective nymphs are Gammarus and of course the Green FlashBack :-).

It's time to re-spool the lines, give them a fresh coat of dressing and tie on new leaders and check the flyboxes if there are enough of what you need. I love that time of year - preparing for a new season and the expectation of Day One. It's still spring, so you never know if it'll be storm or a wonderful, summerlike day!

Unfortunately, I won't be home for season-opening, but I really look forward to the new season of dryflyfishing.
