Ronan's report

Saturday October 27th, 2007

Last weekend we had a fantastic 'Shootout' at Castle Arden, certainly the best I can remember. We had many new faces and we had 11 guys all up including me, fighting it out. Bart came over from the Netherlands - and turned out to be a fantastic guy, looking nothing like his avatar, which I've since changed for him and a very very smooth caster. Ben Dixon also flew in, coming down from Scotland, super guy and nice caster. Ben, Jon and Lee (Whitehunter) - arseholes - also made the trip over for the Friday night.

Lee and I came up with the cunning plan that we would have a few beers on the Friday, get an early night on Saturday and be on Top Form for the Sunday event. Somewhere inbetween - Saturday Night I think - that went wrong, but lets not talk about that...

On the Saturday, Lee (Totsy), Daniel the Abductor, NZ Nick, SA Kevin and Super Mike arrived at some early hour of the morning and the day's entertainment began. We spend the morning casting, working on things and exchanging ideas. The afternoon was a tooth and nail shootout.

I've found some great form since last year and have started breaking rods. The week before I broke my TCR6 in Hungary, while casting, and over the course of the weekend I managed to break another three rods - all on the forward stroke. Don't give me a rod if you're attached to it - anything can happen.

We won't talk about the evening, it was great of course and we all enjoyed the rugby, especially Kevin who started jumping up and down at one point and quickly stopped making sense. On the Sunday we crashed the BFCC and I won three of the disciplines, the 5 and 7-weights as well as the Fisherman's Distance which is some sort of Shooting Head deal. I was only really inspired to throw the Head after Bart found himself surprisingly in the lead, also on his first time. I couldn't throw the DH rod of course, and that's because I have no idea how it works. Maybe Bart should have thrown that first too.

Sunday afternoon saw us back in the field and four of us were still casting into the night, unable to feel our feet or minds. On Monday we headed up to the Tackle and Guns show which - apart from meeting some of our advertisers - was crap, the highlight being me breaking yet another rod.

On Tuesday, Seanie and I showed Bart some real fine English stillwater fishing on Rutland and we all blanked, principally because Adam still has my sinking lines in Hungary. Or at least that's my excuse. Why Bart and Sean came without sinking lines and a spare one for me I have no idea.

All in all I had a fantastic weekend and judging by the emails and PM messages everyone else did too. And, like in any of these weekends, I learned a bunch and this time found form that I haven't really had before. OK I threw 130'6 in the 5-weight last year at the BFCC, but that was windy. This year wasn't and I still felt that that record was up for grabs. In the end it wasn't but I threw 129'11. Interesting stuff.

We've also decided to invade the ISE show next Spring. A bunch of us would like to make the trip, compete and hold a Shootout over there. I think this is the prefect way to meet casting friends and I know everyone involved thinks so too.

So that was last weekend - this week I've been busy; as you can see I've redesigned the FP and have made the Splash Page live (finally). Bookmark this page if you want to avoid the Splash Page, it's there for search engines and first time visitors. I'm also busy working on the November Snapcast. It's been a while since the last one and it's time to get it rolling again.

Babus is over from Hungary - she arrives today. This week, apart from showing Babus around, we'll also be playing with the Casting Analyzer. I hope to be able to capture a truly big cast and post it here on Sexyloops - so we can take it to pieces. Should be interesting. I've already told Bruce my intentions and he asked who I'm going to find to make the Big Cast... Barstool.

Lots happening here on Sexyloops. I'm back in Hungary next week chasing Zander and Asp. If you're in the UK and interested in a casting lesson then be sure to get in touch. I'm keen to bring in a few quid before I leave and next week is still pretty clear.

Cheers,
Paul
