Ronan's report

Monday 4th June, 2007

This week's FP topic is photography. Now I'll be honest, I'm not a photographer. Magnum, Morsie and Hurricane Bob are photographers, you know in the classic sense. I'm a Web photographer, and that's a different thing altogether. For one thing I normally don't even bother framing the subject. Instead I just set the camera on high resolution and crop the image later. It's not that I'm lazy or anything like that, it's just I'm too busy. Yes that's what it is.

And for me, taking photographs is work. Sexyloops work. Sure I'd probably take the odd picture otherwise, but mostly I forget because I end up in that fishing-zone-thing and photographs are always an afterthought. You know like, "Ooops, how the hell did I end up fishing all day and not take a single picture?" And interestingly the best pictures for Sexyloops are not classic well-framed pictures, but instead weird shit that most people delete. Or pictures of people who have fallen in, or down a hole.

I bought my first digital camera in 2000 and the site changed dramatically from that point. Hey, that's when we invented Pic of the Day. Pic of the Day is of course the largest archive on Sexyloops. You can find pretty much anything in there, from underwater flyfishing to Mugwai Hunts. From Montana Conclaves to Autumn NZ fishing. There's fishporn (including this infamous POD and this one), orc battles, advice on how to rebuild your boots and high cuisine.

I now own a waterproof digital camera. It's waterproof, not because I'm into underwater photography (there's a bit), but mainly because there are times when I have to swim my way up a river and I like to keep my camera around my neck in case Deano falls in or hooks himself. And it's very important that I capture this for you guys, because I don't want you to miss out.

I think somewhere I gave advice on how to photograph fish, because for years I didn't do this and so everyone thought I didn't catch any. For this I carry a large softmesh net. The fish will happily wait while you throw your camera on the bank and push the 10 second timer. As it counts down (my camera goes mad after about 8 seconds) I lift the fish, look grim, or surprised, and release the fish. Oh yeah I hate photographs of anglers with artificial smiles. If I'm smiling it's real. Mostly.

So I'm in Canada, starting a new POD series today, and plan to be reunited with my truck this week. I'm in Calgary. Fished the Bow last night. Lost one good fish, should have fished late but I'm not organised yet. And there are mosquitoes around - so you'll be needing this then: The Sexyloops Hoodie.

Have a great week. Sexyloops, it's all happening.

Cheers,
Paul

PS I was supposed to write something on learning to teach. This will happen. Hopefully I'll get some time over the next couple of days.

PPS Really good FP from Bob yesterday. Of course he still has his waistcoat fetish (JR Hartley would wear one too).
