Ronan's report

Friday 4th May, 2007

Lars with a broken toe, and now no Zoran, so you get Oregon instead of South Africa (or is it Serbia) today. What other flyfishing site offers that kind of variety? That's right, there isn't one.

My first May in Oregon and it's all about to happen. Bass and carp are warming up after a long winter, spring chinook salmon and the first of the summer run steelhead are making their way into a few rivers, the season is open on all the trout lakes in the central part of the state, and the stream trout fishing is in full swing with the salmonfly (giant stonefly) hatch just around the corner. The possibilities are endless.

For the weekend I'm planning some saltfly explorations on the Oregon Coast. Surf Perch are the target. I've never caught one before (never even seen one in real life, actually) so it's all very exciting. The plan is to fish weighted streamers and crab patterns in the surf using shooting heads [and 2, 3, 4] and catch loads of fish.

Today I'm off doing my real job, surveying a local canal. Today is also an important person's birthday. She's a flyfisher too, like the rest of us, and if it wasn't for her I wouldn't be here today. Happy Birthday, Mom!
