Hooks

If you tie your own flies then you can choose which hooks to use. Choose hooks with a round bend, a fairly short point and a small barb.

For dries (with the exception of upside-down styles - USD's) I always use down eyed hooks.

For wets, lures and nymphs there might actually be an advantage in straight eyes, otherwise use down-eyed. Long shanked hook (l/s) come in varying lengths - in this guide I am using 4x (the length of the hook shank is four times the width of the hook gap).

For tying emergers and other dries use fine wire hooks. This way you can make the dressing as sparse as possible.
