Picture of the Day
Storm Drain Salmon

One of the saddest and profoundly disturbing discoveries I've ever made, these juvenile wild salmon turned up dead in a storm drain underneath the street in a residential area along the Oregon Coast. The pipe network connects to a nearby estuary, where the juveile salmon spend their youth. They made a wrong turn up the wrong culvert. Just as the rain can bring life to the river, in the urban world it can also bring death. Where does your runoff go? The soapy water from washing your car? The toxic heavy metals in automobile brake dust washed from the road by the rain? Think about it.
