The world's best flyfishing site.

Picture of the Day
First Redds.

Late February, and the the weather is warming up in the Pacific NW. The signs are everywhere, even under water. The first of the winter steelhead are beginning to spawn. This redd was in a small tributary of the river we were fishing last weekend. Fortunately, most spawning areas in small tributaries are protected with regulations that prohibit angling. However, it's not the case on some of the larger rivers, where isolated patches of spawning gravel are just as important. As anglers it is our duty to be able to recognize these spots, identify redds, and avoid wading or fishing in these areas to protect future generations of fish.
