Fishing with Stuntman Ronan

It's been more than five years since Ronan and I fished together and so we were due a serious fishing catch-up. Ronan and I have fished a lot together in the past; we made three Sexyloops fly fishing DVDs, a series on sexyloops.tv and we even co-hosted a show together on US Discovery Channel. We fish well together and it's been a pleasure showing Ronan the Malaysian fishery where I've spent more than 1000 days fishing in the last five and a half years.

This is always a hard fishery. It really is a one fish/day fishery and one "good" fish/week. Certainly with regards the sight fishing for Snakehead and Giant Gourami - Jungle Perch are a little different of course, but I haven't spent much time targeting those as of yet. Ronan caught a 3.5KG Toman (Giant Snakehead) on the first week off babies and a 3KG Giant Gourami on his penultimate fishing evening and a 2KG Gourami on his last cast!

Most people who come here catch no fish on their first trip, but Ronan is one of the best anglers I know, and these two past weeks have been particularly difficult (it hasn't rained once since he arrived which is abnormal for this time of year, and rain particularly helps with regards Gourami and you can see them in wind lanes. In the two weeks spent here the lake has dropped by over a metre!

We took lots of video footage and I shall make a short movie later this week and Ronan will make a more involved feature from his perspective in a few months time.

I'm in KL at the moment, doing some chores, catching up with Sexyloops, dropping Ronan off at the airport and saying hello to my fiancée! I'll be back in the jungle next week and plan to fish ONLY sinking lines for a week. This should be very interesting indeed. It's how most fly anglers fish this water and I have a lot of work to do in this regards, with not least the entire Temenggor fishery to re-explore.

It was excellent to catch up with Ronan again. We had campfires almost every night, fished hard every day, celebrated his birthday in style, played some serious pool with Des, sang at a friend's campfire. In true Ronan Style we had two electrical fires in the boat and many fish opportunities.

Have a fantastic week and please don't forget to vote for your favourite entry. Round two has begun and I'll post an entry from Norway later today.

Cheers,
Paul
