The world's best flyfishing site.

Vice

A vice will hold a hook for you securely up until the very last stage of tying, when it will all of a sudden, and without warning, do one of two things: it will either release the fly, causing the thread and hackles to unwind, enabling you to fashion an altogether new fly, or else it will break the hook. Some vices, especially the old hands (and was that a pun?), will release the same fly a few times before breaking the hook. The only recourse is to buy a very expensive vice through the tackleshop. It will do exactly the same thing of course. Then, once you have bought your new and expensive vice, you can email me for some advice and I will tell you to release some of the bobbin tension.

NB some Americans spell vice as vise and the word is then pronounced slower and with more significance.
