Bona fide fly-fishing and casting junkie Chris Dore invites you to sample some of the world class sight fly fishing the Southland region of New Zealand has to offer.
Small Streams, Big Trout, Dry Fly is Chris' mantra, and there will be plenty of this as he guides you upon some of NZ's most spectacular trout streams. Match the hatch upon the mighty Mataura, or stalk the wily browns of the South Island backcountry.
Chris lives for this stuff, and as an FFF Certified Casting Instructor, is always happy to help out with both technique and tangles.
Hit him up for a high adrenaline trout chasing adventure, or maybe a sedate evening getting technical on those gently sipping mayfly feeders. This is NZ fly fishing, Kiwi style!

There’s a saying - 90% of the fish are caught by 10% of the anglers. The objective of the Essential Skills DVDs is to make this more democratic.
Entomology, tying and fishing imitative patterns are not just for advanced or competition anglers. They are the Essential Skills you will need to become one of those anglers who catch 90% of the fish. They are simple practical skills that you can learn easily from watching these DVDs Order line 020 7434 0332 www.essential-skills.tv Czech Nymphing / Upstream Nymphing and North Country Spiders Running Time : 2 hrs 57 mins I learnt Czech Nymphing while fishing the 1996 World Fly Fishing Championships in the Czech Republic. Does it work as well in other countries as it did in the rivers of the Czech Republic? You bet it does! It’s devastatingly effective. Upstream Nymphing can be hard work in fast riffles, but more often than not, it is a very rewarding technique. North Country Spiders are usually fished ‘down and across’. However, a more effective technique is ‘square across’ with some downstream drift and that’s the technique you’ll see me demonstrating in this DVD. Search and Sight Fishing / The Deep Diving Shrimp and Chalk Stream Entomology Running Time: 2 hours Oliver goes search fishing on a stretch of the Upper Avon that Frank Sawyer keepered, using the famous Killer Bug. Then you see him on to the crystal clear waters of the Lambourn, sight fishing with the world famous Sawyer’s Pheasant Tail Nymph. An understanding of aquatic entomology is an essential skill. When sampling on chalk streams, shrimps or scuds often prove to be the major trout food. Oliver’s Deep Diving Shrimp is an excellent pattern, particularly for those deeper powerful runs, where the big fish lurk. Fishing Dry Fly on a Chalk Stream / Mayfly Time on a Chalk Stream Running Time: 2 hours Oliver’s mainstay dun imitating dry flies are the Paradun and his Footprint Dun, both accurately match any of the smaller upwings, right down to size 22. The Paradun easy to tie and floats like a cork, furthermore it lands correctly on every cast. Oliver’s Footprint Dun is for those occasions when you encounter really picky, difficult fish, but this pattern can often save the day. The Greendrake or Mayfly is famed for hatching in vast numbers. However, not all hatches are coordinated with huge numbers; they can trickle off steadily for several hours - in this situation, the trout can be quite cautious. Now it is essential that your artificial is a good, imitative copy and Oliver’s Mohican Mayfly is an ideal pattern for both the trickle and flush hatches. Wet Fly Fishing on Rivers Running Time 1 hour 45 minutes I love the short line upstream style as advocated by W.C. Stewart. It is so much more effective because the flies fish naturally, in a dead drift. Another dead drift wet fly technique that I developed is ‘the escalator’. It is an easy style to master, increases your search area and imparts a lift to the flies as the drift fishes out. The ‘across’ method should also be part of your armoury, as it is particularly effective on untypical wet fly water, for example near flat glides. Here then, are the three alternatives to ‘down and across’. These techniques are easily mastered and if you want to improve your catch rate, they’re how you should wet fly fish on rivers. Big Dry Flies for Fast Water Running Time: 2 hours 22 minutes In my opinion, the Klinkhåmer has made the biggest impact on river fly fishing in my lifetime. It is a universal fly; it copies everything and nothing in particular. This pattern has an unbelievable ability to bring fish up out of the blue! It is a low maintenance fly – usually just a few good cheeks full of air and you’re out fishing again. It is also a straight forward tying exercise, even for beginners. There are two more fast water dry fly patterns which I wouldn’t be without. Roman Moser’s Balloon Caddis and my own Tape Wing Caddis, both will also bring fish up out of the blue. Streamer Fishing on Rivers Running Time: 2 hours 2 minutes Streamer fishing has its own particular skills, equal to any other fly fishing discipline and most importantly, it attracts the big fish. Your ability to spot likely big fish holding lies will improve dramatically. You will fish confidentially, knowing that very large trout aren’t usually interested in small flies. Essential Patterns Volume 1 – Quick Ties and Favourite Flies Running Time 2 hours 52 minutes Even a relative newcomer to fly tying can, with a little patience and perseverance, master the advanced techniques. Just follow what I do step by step and it is easy. Even for the more accomplished fly tyer, there are some tricks of the trade that I am sure you will not have tried before. The Patterns CDC Dun, Semi Circle Spinner, Bubble Wing Caddis, Veli’s Fluttering Willow Fly, Griffith’s Gnat, See Thro’ Buzzer, Plaited Abdomen Damsel, ‘F’ Fly, Foam Ant, Bibio Hopper Essential Patterns Volume 2 – Woven Flies Running Time 3 hours 15 minutes Constructing the bodies of artificial fishing flies has historically always been a question of wrapping various materials around the hook shank. However, there is much more a fly tyer can do with body materials than merely wrapping them around the hook shank. Probably the most dramatic alternative to the traditional method is Weaving. The Patterns Parallel or Shuttle Weave - Polish Woven Nymph Pott Weave - Oliver Edwards Hoglouse Overhand or Knot Weave - Knotted Emerging Caddis Half Hitch Weave - Woven Epoxy Perch Fry Chequer Weave - Chequered Stonefly Nymph http://www.essential-skills.tv
