Ronan's report

Monday May 19th, 2014

We were in Germany at the German Fly Festival

We're not anymore - at the fly festival that is. Paul, Trevor and Lee are still in Germany, and I think they're fishing today.

The festival was great - thanks for having us over, Bernd! Great venue, great atmosphere and great people.

Paul should be back online, in Hungary, sometime tomorrow, so Sexyloops Normal should be reinstated (whatever that is :-).

I seem to remember that Scott was the first company to produce a proper, 9' 4-wt carbon rod a long time ago, and I can imagine why it's not a easy task. A 4-wt is a trout rod, so it needs to load early to cast short lines and still form proper loops, and it also needs to be designed in such a way that it doesn't fold in the tip- and middle sections on a 50' or 60' cast. And of course, if you can get the butt section to actually contribute instead of just "prolonging" a 7'6"-rod to 9', then that's added bonus.

Paul had promised that he would bring my Hot Torpedo 9' 4-wt to Germany, but unfortunately it wasn't done yet. But, I did get to cast another production version, and I can tell you that it's an awesome rod. Snappy, ultra fast (NOT stiff) tip section that allows clean, tight loops on short to medium distances. At longer distances, the blank bends deep, unloads fast and still produces clean, crisp loops with a very straight rod log (because of the ultra fast, not stiff tip section).

These words could describe the other Hot Torpedos as well, but the 4 is not entirely the same. Overall, it's a little softer (it's a 4-wt and it's made for presentation casting, thin tippets and spooky fish. And the 6- and 8-wt HTs do not bend as deep as the 4, but the 4 is not a distance tool. Don't misunderstand - it'll put out 80 feet of 4-wt line in perfect style, but it's not where it excels in my hands, and if I was fishing those distances more often that not, I'd never choose a 4-wt anyway.

I really look forward to actually fishing this rod, and I'll report back when I get the chance!

Thanks for a great weekend to everyone - I hope to be back!

Lars
