Ronan's report

Saturday March 22nd, 2014

Lars has just remembered it's his Mum's birthday today, which puts his life in chaos and me on Strike! Which is fine by me because it's Saturday and I generally don't fish hard on weekends, instead leaving it for those who have less fishing time than I. I'm just back from a gruelling training session - it's been a tough month of training but really starting to see the benefits in run times and the weight sessions have improved dramatically.

Anyway following some complications, our UK rod building specialist, who many of you will know (Trev, the Sexyloops Polecat flytying king) will be collecting various rod components from Sexyloops HQ and will be assembling the new bells and whistles Hot Torpedo 9ft 4-weight.

There has been an enormous amount of work that has gone into this rod and I truly think it's right on the limits of what is possible in this length to line weight ratio, so still maintain the Hot Torpedo feel. Development of the four weight began at the same time as development of the 6 and 8 weights. The 6-weight as you'll know we released over a year ago and the eight weight towards the end of last summer. So it's actually taken us over two and a half years of development.

I suspect that the 9ft4 HT is the hardest rod we'll have to produce. I don't know of many really good 9ft 4-weights on the market. But this one is a weapon. It's crisp, fast and light with the same uncompromising tip recovery that I require in every rod. It throws exceptionally beautiful loops with a four weight line - I have an original TCR Performance 4-line which I've been using - but I think the thing that really convinced me has been the reaction of those who've cast it, from friends at AAPGAI to the Malaysians, and of course it's been through a Sexyloops Shootout (last December).

It is not a 5-weight rod. There is a 15% mass difference between a 4 and a 5 weight line and you really notice it at this end of the spectrum. So anyway that quite exciting and just in time for the new season in the UK! We have quite a few pre-orders on this rod but no one yet has specially ordered serial number one. First come first serve!

I did a bit of ending in the Sexyloops Tackle Shop this week and brought it more into line with the rest of Sexyloops and a bit more interesting to read! The four weight isn't listed yet but will be by the end of next week. Incidentally we have a new shop being built and a new front end for Sexylops being tested. The site is going to have a complete overhaul this Spring.

Have a fantastic day! Tomorrow Anvar on Double Taper lines and the winners of the Ugly Fly Competition!

Cheers, Paul
