Ronan's report

Sunday October 20th, 2013

So what a great start to the season we have had here in NZ so far. I would like to see a lot more water in our rivers for this time of year but I certainly am not complaining about the condition of time fish.

To catch them you have to be on the ball: they won't wait around for you to be ready. If they are there, you must cast to them, not mess about picking daisies...

My regular clients recognise a common phrase of mine often bellowed out on the stream "move with me", or "stay with me". I don't stick around in dead water and will always put myself just beside the optimal casting position, where I would be positioned if I held the rod. This is the position that must be occupied by you, not left of, right of, or 100 yards downstream.

On one of our drunken discussions of recent, where we again set the fishing world to rights, Ronan and I both agreed that in general, the sooner you get your fly to a fish after spotting him the better chance you have of catching him.

1: He may see you.

2: He may move into a less accessible position.

3: He may disappear completely.

There is no 4...

None of these are good, and why isn't there ever a number 4?!

The trout don't care if you're not ready, if you're a little rusty, if you only fish a couple of times a year and can't tie a fly on quick... You need to step up.

Practise too your knots at home: with clients, I will replace tippet and flies in a flash. They are ready to go... You should practise your knots at home: Get fast, fluent and accurate with both leader to tippet and fly to leader knots of your choice. Recognise when it's easier to cut and start again on a tangle: I never hesitate to bin a tippet and replace with a new one if tangled... It takes a minute to replace and you never need an excuse for fresh Fluro and a fresh knot, eh?

Get up with the play and put in the effort to prep yourself for your next trip to the river.

Get some! And quick!
Chris
