Ronan's report

Wednesday 4th September, 2013

I'm still in Russia, just out from the fishing camp and preparing to fly back to Hungary soon. A message from Bernd asks me to cover for him, since he's also on a fishing trip!

I've just had one of the best fishing experiences of my life, with great company, Northern Lights, the best night's fishing ever - including an 11lb trophy brown, 27 browns in six days (over 3.5lbs), with an average weight of 5.5lbs. That is very high quality fishing in anyone's book, and I never realised that brown trout could ever be like this in Europe.

In fact I've had some rethinks over the past week and have come to the conclusion that I very much need to spend more time fishing for brown trout within the Arctic Circle!

I have lots of video footage and think it's time to start SLTV3. The plan this week is to find a couple of days to remember how to do this and put together a great show.

Incidentally this has been my first genuine trophy brown trout landed. I've lost quite a few, including one that would have been well into the teens a few years ago in a NZ mouse year, and there have been others that I'm pretty sure would have pulled the scales down past the double figure mark, all of which got off in destructive ways, but it's the first fish for me that has actually been landed and topped ten pounds.

That was fish number ten on the most amazing night's fishing I've had, starting at 10pm and finishing at 2am, with half an hour of a Northern Lights show directly above my head, the most incredible number of takes and action (and non-hook-ups!) to surface tube flies, solid solid fish landed: 4.5, 6, 4, 4, 3.5, 4.5, 6, 5, 7 and finally 11lbs. Cloud 9 for me, and I'm still riding it.

Yesterday was a great day too; 4, 5.5, 7.5, 4.25, 5.5 and 6. Some of which were caught fully on video, from take to landing. I'm quite excited about the Go-Pro camera.

Anyway, this is all to come after editing. I'd like to thank Varzina Trout Camp / Sportfish Tour and particularly Vladimir, Galina and my fishing partner and new friend, Anvar. Thank you all for making this amazing fishing experience happen.

Incidentally, I suspect we're going to hear a lot more from Russia on Sexyloops. I've made a lot of truly excellent friends here over the last couple of years. This is somewhere I'm going to start spending some time - I don't know how yet! - but with this quality of fishing and people, this is definitely a place to be.
