This past week was a week of learning and experimentation. I was on a brilliant graduate level course in biology and engineering , looking at river habitats and hydraulics. I've taken a number of courses from the professor, Dr. Robert Newbury, and I always learn something new from him each time. At 75, not only is he a genius still teaching, but he has maintained a great sense of humour in a world that could be constantly frustrating. To that end, when he suggested a project should be undertaken to test if salmon use river hydraulics to dig redds, rather than physically dig them, a friend and I decided to take him seriously- and not! My friend Vaughn and I planned out a test of velocities under a replicated redd digging event. To dull the boredom of plain engineering and hydraulics, we decided to take up carpentry to carve out models of fish to use in stream, much more realistic than the suggested flat shingles. Beer, axes, dull knives, and more beer certainly make experiments more interesting! Once in the stream, we had some technical difficulties with a tiny velocity meter, but were able to record the predicted velocity changes and capture gravel being scoured out from under the fake tail. It was a success to be proud of, a shining moment in the ichthyological field. Dr. Newbury applauded our efforts, and mentioned that if he had his way we would be awarded graduate degrees for the work, or at least we should get more wine... I love science,
