Ronan's report

After two weeks of exploring I think I've finally found what I've been looking for; an extensive bay with Snakehead! Hopefully I'll be able to film some of the explosive action. I have a headcam, a rodcam and a handycam - all waterproof! On Saturday I managed to film a small 2Kg snakehead from take to release. But there are some big mothers there too and the plan is to film capturing one of these big ones from these three angles. I think that will be cool as hell. With this trip and the last couple of trips I should have enough content for a couple of prime SLTV slots.

I've shifted camp spots again. I met some nice guys from the wildlife department who explained to me that elephants walk all over 4x4s that are parked in their territory, and have knocked over all the phone booths on the hill to prove it. They don't do it out of aggression, apparently, but simply because they can. That same evening, while turning into the spot, I came across an elephant who was definitely not happy that I was there. I've already put a small hole in Ling's bumper, returning to KL with the roof caved in would probably not be a good look. "Hi Ling, here's your truck back. It turned out I only needed it for one month and not two. Sorry about the roof... elephants, man."

Talking of which, I spent most of the morning trying to work out why "elephants never forget". What a strange expression that is! I mean it's not like an elephant is your typical every-day animal. Why do they never forget? And how did they work this out? Is there an animal forgetful test that I know nothing about? And have they tested it on all animals? "Well dude, we tested the mice and the monkeys first, followed by cats, dogs, sheeps, squirrels and goldfish - they all forget, especially the goldfish. Cows, pigs, horses, giraffes - very poor memories. But then we tested the elephant! There was nothing they couldn't recall. Unbelievable memory - they simply never forget."

Once again I'm completely single. Not surprising really. It must be difficult for someone who doesn't travel or fish to understand someone like me who spends most of his time doing both. And there are absolutely no women here, I can tell you! Consequently I'm growing my Pirate Beard. Now if only I can find a girl who likes fishing, travelling, camping and pirate beards. Ooh arr.

I've made a short movie clip of the 2Kg Toman from Saturday, just to show Harps that Snakehead do fight! Remember I'm not fishing for 2Kg Snakehead, but 5kg plus and much bigger if possible. Consequently I'm using a TCX 10 weight, 8 weight RIO Outbound Short, 80lb butt section, 40lb leader and 8 inches of 30lb Tyger Wire. This way I have a half decent shot of keeping the big ones out of snags (the lake bed is a flooded jungle - the oldest rainforest in the world apparently!). Here is the movie.

Finally, today we're migrating to the New Board. Please login and rejoin if you haven't. I'll keep registrations automated for most of this week and then we'll go back to email registrations so we can keep the spammers out (that seems to work). I'll keep the old Board open for reading and replying to open topics. When these dry up I'll make it read only. Any suggestions for the new Board please let me know. I'm getting quite handy with the modifications.

Now I wonder if a pirate beard will help me catch a big Gouramy on the Hot Torpedo? Only one way to find out...
