Ronan's report

Saturday October 6th 2012

We've had A LOT of rain in Denmark in the last month or so. In fact I mean, really, A LOT! In River Skjern, Denmark's premier salmon river, I spoke to a guy last week, a 62 year old man, who's fished the river for more than 40 years, and he's never seen it so full of water as it was last week. The same goes for River Varde, where I usually fish for salmon.

For at least two months, I haven't had a trip where I didn't put on my rain jacket at some point (and Thursday I left it on the car, because the weather looked very nice, and of course I ran into a shower and got soaked - with a cold to show for it to day). When properly dressed for it, I really enjoy being out in the rain, whether I'm fishing, digging or just enjoying it!

I don't mind high water - it's good for the river system, it's good for the runs of fish and it's good for the fishing as well. High water usually brings up new fish and the ones that are in the river already begin moving around, both as a result of new fish competing with them over lies, but high water also encourages them to move further up stream.

So far so good, but it's been a real blow out. Last week, I was fishing a type 6/7 shooting head, with a T-18 tip and a tungsten weighted fly - and I wasn't touching bottom. And add to that the amount of weed that was tumbling down stream constantly snagging my fly and fishing was no fun. The spin/gear fishermen has reasonably good fishing though. And even if, with a little practice, casting a rig like the one mentioned to relatively easy, it's still not as fun as when you can suffice with a type 3/4 sinker :-).

River Skjern closes tomorrow, and "my river", River Varde, is open until October 31st, so I hope for a little less rain so the water level drops a little more and the drifting weed settle, so fishing can become more effective. There are a lot of fish in the river, sea trout and salmon, and it should be possible to close the season with a couple of good catches. I mean, right now the chance of a 4' long buck salmon is real!
