Ronan's report

Friday 24th August, 2012

I must confess that I also started out fly fishing as a part of the "cast and hope" brigade. Hoping, wishing, praying and even trying to bribe the fish Gods to let something – anything – jump onto my fly…

And so this fishing operandi continued for a minimum of four to five times per week for an entire year. Maybe I was just not hoping-praying-wishing hard enough as all I had to show for that effort was just four fish.

So what changed?? There was this constant nagging in my head reminding me that if I wanted a different result, I need to do something different. Actually the nagging was saying the height of stupidity was doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. The truth is that I did not know enough to try different things.

As time progressed, I realised subtle differences in what I was doing. The results were generally positive which made all my initial fruitless efforts well worthwhile. I realised too that with a little science, fishing can actually become predictable. Fishing became a lot more calculated and as a consequence, positive results became more frequent.

To help matters, I tested the science in all types of conditions and soon learnt what worked when, new casting techniques, new ways to present flies, what tackle to use, how to read the conditions better, how to read the water better, etc, etc, etc.

Long story shortened, I suppose that we have all had a similar learning curve and that I am no different to any other fly fisher. My only hope as a fly fishing philanthropist is that we use all this wonderful knowledge and information to help shorten the learning curve for any new fly fisher, and actually get the message across that catching fish is not by accident. Have fun always.

Tight lines and screaming reels.
