Ronan's report

Tuesday 04th October, 2011

I've missed a couple weeks of front pages and I don't have a real excuse. I have been catching fish, and driving around the west, and doing all sorts of things that make me glad to be the person I am, in the place that I live, doing the job that I do.

My job brought me to an industrial site a couple of weeks ago. I'm not one to turn my nose at any species of fish, especially those amazing carp in some of those dirty warm rivers, but this site is tucked away amongst beautiful clean trout streams. The last place I wanted to fish was along a concrete wall with dirty algae and the smell of sulphur. Despite my misgivings I grab my six weight and flicked a hopper out into the scum. It was a poor cast, a short tangle that landed with a splat not too far from the near bank, in the shallow water.

As I stood there, disgust in my eyes, and started to pull the slack, I noticed a wake through the water. This big ol' rainbow came out of the depths to smash the hopper. I sat there with a star-eyed dumb look on my face as the mouth opened, the fly disappeared, and the fish turned to the depths. It was only luck - and drag from the slack - that set the hook in the trout's mouth. That trout measured a solid, albeit skinny 19 inches, a monster for the 5 foot wide, industrial trickle.

I have caught some beauty brookies, and rescued some browns, whitefish and suckers from an isolated pond. I also set up tent and drank beer, fished and talked shop with a handful of other great fisheries biologists while saving some cutthroat and brookies at a perched culvert.

So, as you've read, I have been busy and don't have an excuse for not getting some fp's done. Feel sorry for my busy-ness if you must, but I'm gonna sit back with a beer and dream of keeping busy.
