Ronan's report

Thursday 30th September, 2010
No Davy today. Instead, a story of woe!

Down here in the Southwest we may be going through a record heat wave, but a recent early morning had me pulling down my hat down around my ears. For the first time this fall, a deep chill squeezed in through my collar and under my coat as we jammed across the lake in the pre-dawn hour. I held my hands tight around my coffee cup at my knees as capt Tom the fox expertly pushed us through the Narrows. The toothy clench holding his swisher sweet and wind squinted eyes lit by the moon, Jupiter and running lights looked a grin, but in between jokes and appraising looks fire spit from his lips. He explained low water, irrigation draws, agency conflicts and colorful commented on the engineering corps.

Tom, a buddy's father, is a meat guide and offered a few hours, but made it clear he wasn't going to miss his game. While he was quite cynical about fly fishing, he gave a nod when I got a few casts off before his slip bobber set up station. I'd rigged a sink line and rabbit leech the night before not wanting to fumble in the dark and miss the early bite. As Jay Fair says, these "trout are only interested in getting full". They're a hot silvery strain that gets spread out all over the western alkaline lakes. I slowly stripped in my offering.

As light lifted, a rise began to small caddis and midges. That's when it happened. Sure that the rises would be short lived, I didn't switch spools to a floater. I don't recall exactly if I was stubborn, lazy or asleep. From that I'm pretty sure you can up with the rest of the story of too little too late. Tom only managed one, so please leave a shred of my dignity that I can cling to later.

Eric
