Ronan's report

Monday 7th June, 2010

I've just returned from the Gacka River in Croatia. On Saturday I was teaching children (and a few adults) to cast, while my good friend Milan gave some fishing instruction and Tomo gave a flytying demo. The Gacka is one of Europe's best trout chalkstreams, with it's own type of brown trout. It was severely damaged during the war, and there is an intensive trout restoration project in place.

Currently there are several species and strains of trout in the stream; the Gacka trout, brown trout from northern Europe and rainbows. The restoration program rightly favours the indigenous fish species. Hopefully as time proceeds this will be the only trout in the river. Of course that's down to us - if we don't want rainbows (I don't) then there won't be any. Personally I find the project to be forward thinking and worthy of every bit of support we as anglers can give.

Incidentally I don't charge when I do days such as this, some things are more important!

On Sunday I fished with Milan (Croatia's best flyfishing guide), Tomo (Gacka's best angler), Babus (sexiest woman in Hungary), two dogs and a nice cameraman who left too early - ie before I started turning a few fish on their heads.

From Latohegy it's a three hour drive for me, which makes the Gacka very much striking distance for a weekend, and I know I'll be spending more time there. It's close, I have a wonderful time, I make new friends every trip, and the fishing is complicated. I'm either trying to overcome difficult drag situations, or I'm three-dimensionally deep nymphing. One thing is for sure: I need to spend some time at the vise; there are patterns and ideas I have that need a dunking.

Anyway, always a pleasure to visit Croatia and to be in the company of such good friends and first class anglers.

This week I'm working on the school I have here in Hungary. Peter the Pig Hunter is going to help be build a terrace, but before we start chopping down trees, I have to build a dungeon for the Marc Machine (also known as my tri-bike). The dungeon will be going beneath the terrace, which is why it comes first of course, and I'll be taking the earth, moving it to the back of the sauna (I don't live in a cabin; it's a sauna - with an orgasmatron) and turning it into a raised distance-casting veggie plot. Distance casting weekend 19th/20th June. Bring shovels.

My Ironman training has been a bit patchy recently, but this week I'm cranking it up, training hard and I'm going to try kick-boxing. Miss SL has been kick-boxing for the past six months, so it's really about self-defence.

Good stuff on the Board - check it out here!
