Ronan's report

Sunday 18th April, 2010

My name is Edan Fisher and I am a Aussie Fly nut! I FlyFish when I'm not earning money to go FlyFishing. It's an addiction. My Partner in crime is Andy Congram, who also FlyFishes when not earning money to go FlyFishing. We have spent the last 3 years exploring our Northern Australia fishery, Primarily targeting sight fishing opportunities in the estuaries and Billabongs surrounding our home base of Darwin, Northern Territory, Outback Australia. Target species include but are not limited to Barramundi, Saratoga, Golden Trevally, Giant Trevally, Queenfish, Mackerel, Tuna, Sailfish, Threadfin Salmon, Blue Salmon, Mangrove Jack, Blue Bastards, Brown Bastards, Bream, various Snapper, and many others. It is possible to catch many species in a single days fishing, providing an excellent and dynamic fishery.

Below is a recent report of a weekend at Corroboree Billabong

Corroboree - Darwin Flyrodders Club Outing - Comp Prefish - Sat 10th Sun 11th

Congo and I started with a 5am planned departure from Darwin. After having some car troubles (like getting in it!) we finally made it to the billabong at about 6.45am not long after sun rise. Overcast conditions had us anticipating a nice long morning chasing ravaging topwater feeding Saratoga.

The fish did not fail to disappoint us! Andriod Congorium (Andy) managed a "tweed wearers" like start, boating 2 Saratoga within 15 minutes. The second fish exploded on a Blooped Gurgler and raged into the air as if possessed, with the orange morning light illuminating the action. I only managed to personally meet about 20 Tarpon in the first couple of hours. They were thick to say the least!

During the heat of the day, the 5 weight came out for some Tarpon action. Some were so small they barely troubled even the 5 weight noodle for a bend! But others put up a good show on the 8 pound tippet. Like a trout on the 'roids.

We caught up with Rog Basset, Toc's, Gary and Linda at Couzins Lookout for lunch and a quick yak and exchange of fishing reports and ideas. It seemed everyone was doing it pretty tough on the Barra, with not 1 being caught!!!! Alas....it was a Tarpon fest.

Andy and I fished into the evening and I finally found a Saratoga. As the photos show, the sunset colours fantastically display this ancient species beauty.

Cruising back to camp in the dark I had a mega bug smash me in the eye, which I couldn't get out. I must put those clear safety glassess in the boat....That's the third time this years it's happened........

We made a modest fire and enjoyed a few of our home brew beers, wines, more beers..... and our regular completely bazaar and zainy conversations until the mozzie attack could be tolerated no more, and hit the hay.

We woke before Sunrise and targeted some moving water with 350 and 400 grain lines with weighted pink things in tow. My first 2 casts produced 2 Barra. Bonus!, after not much action the previous day it was refreshing to have a couple to the boat nice and early. Although they were both only 30 cms............ We both saw the eat from the second fish after following the fly all the way up from deep water to the boat, with the customary "ehBoofgh" us flynuts live for.

We caught up with BC and Leanne, who were prospecting likely lilly pad areas, and Michael Austin, who had a late start due to a pesky flat battery! and exchanged a couple of fly's that had been working on the toga

The lilliy edges again produced a Toga for Andy on a surface fly, and as the day heated we headed for the Hilux aircon' and the boatwash/car unload routine.

Summing up, Andy finished with 7 Toga and a shipload of Tarpon, and I finished with 1 Toga, 2 Barra and a cargo shipload of Tarpon. Hopefully the Barra fire up over the next couple of weeks before the comp.

Good luck to all who are competing this year, Andy and I will be away fishing some private water on the mighty Vic River.

Seriously tight loops.....

Edo & Andy
