Ronan's report

Wednesday 30th September, 2009

With Harps taking on Tuesday and me on Wednesday Sexyloops readers are set to get their fill of environmental issues by midweek. If you can't get enough, join us over on the Board where The Daily Planet is the place to discuss issues threatening our resources and more importantly, to find solutions and take action to set things right.

I must admit that I've been a reluctant convert to the ways of the internet. Chat rooms, forums, blogs, websites. All of the formats have been used to publish gross reports and maps on how, when, and where to fish waters formerly known only as Mystery River X. Too much commercialism. Too much hollow pride. Too much information.

But, I'm coming around to see the other side of the coin. The internet allows us to spread the word and rally support for important causes.

Through Sexyloops, many of you are familiar with our quest to maintain regulations requiring Catch and Release for all wild steelhead landed on Oregon's famed Umpqua River system. This is a great example of how we've used the internet to fight the good fight. I've learned a lot from the experience, and now we're gearing up for another round of the fight.

This month we've gotten some help from some local PNW fishing blogs to the tune of over 180 new signatures on the petition. I'm seeing the names of some very well respected steelhead anglers on the list. These are guys who remember the old days and want better for the resource. Word is that TU and other are banding together on the issue as well. We'll be live at the commission meetings to back up the signatures and put faces and loud voices to the names.

So, for now, a public "thank you" to all who have helped and will help. And, a few new sources of reading material from the world of blog for you to enjoy.
