Ronan's report

Wednesday 12th August, 2009

It's my third full summer living in Oregon. By now, I've got a bit of a fishing routine figured out, and right now it's all about summer run steelhead. A lot of anglers start chasing summer fish as early as May, but I'm distracted by other things then. For some reason, August is when I really get what my Dad calls "the zeal for steel".

It's all a bit crazy. Traveling all over, meeting up with buddies from every corner of the PNW, waking up ridiculously early to ensure that you'll be in on the magic of first fishing light, and leaving every ounce of energy on the river, then driving home after dark and crashing with the best intentions of making it to work on time on Monday. Friendships lapse, and others grow. Meals are missed, and sleep is a rare commodity, gained in small burst at strange hours and not always in comfortable beds.

For me, summer run steelhead are magical, and the season to fish for them in their prime always seems too short. We fish hard, almost manically sometimes, trying to squeeze every drop out of summer. Along the way, we find sun, rain, new friends, old friends, firsts, lasts, snakes, serpents, cougars (!), sadness, happiness, and sometimes.
