The dry grass, rabbit brush, and sage crinkle and hiss against your waders as you walk down to the water. Every little sound has you on high alert.
Was that one?
You know they're there, but you're never sure exactly where.
Like ninjas, perfectly camouflaged and adapted to their environment. Masters of the sneak attack.
They wait silently, not for anglers, but our encroachment on their turf sometimes ends in a standoff. Sometimes worse.
After all the false alarms, snapped twigs, and panicked leaps, when the sound finally comes there is no mistaking it.
Nothing sounds like a rattlesnake.
It's more exciting than hooking your first steelhead, but not nearly as fun. Anticipation never dulls the surprise. In a wild mix of fear, respect, and fascination, you can literally feel the adrenaline shoot through your body when you get buzzed.
Stay safe out there.
