Ronan's report

Monday 23rd March, 2009

I think the concept of close seasons and opening day has almost disappeared from the UK, which is a shame, but judging by Sean's page yesterday there are considerably more pressing problems to worry about than this. When I first began flyfishing it was on a UK reservoir. The season ran from the last Saturday in March through to the end of October. Opening day would see several hundred anglers lined along the banks, perhaps only 30 feet apart in places, and often closer. Almost to a man and woman they'd be fishing a slow sinking line and stripping a streamer of some sort - most likely a Viva. Sounds kinda weird I know. And if you wanted to fish one of the hot spots you'd have to arrive in the middle of the night and start queuing early. Catch and release was forbidden despite the management not being Germans.

Those opening days were especially interesting if you were a local and a season ticket holder, because you'd get to meet friends, friends you hadn't seen since last Autumn, you'd feel that Spring was about to arrive even if it was still bitterly cold and life was great because you were fly fishing again, you'd be fishing again tomorrow and the next day and the day after and all summer-long. I've never been too good in the winters, I get depressed for one thing, which was one of my main reasons for travelling, and opening day back then was a rebirth.

Here in Hungary it's close season for the fish I want to be catching - asp and pike. I think I can fish for chub and carp and soon I probably will. Asp fishing in Hungary doesn't start for another month. It's starting to do my head in. Running and training is fine but there's no substitute for fishing. I'll probably have to take a trip down to Bosnia just to stay sane this April and of course I'll be in Denmark fishing for Lolita.

Something I was considering today on the drive back from two dogs shagging Cherry, is building a pond or small lake at the bottom of Latohead. Bass do well here in Hungary and so long as I dig deep enough the pond won't completely freeze in the winter. If anyone knows how I go about building a pond then please post on the board, because it's either that or the fish tank.

Cheers,
Paul
