Ronan's report

Saturday, 21st February 2009

A lot of the Danish rivers and streams remain closed until April 1st, which is sort of alright as it's good for the fish, and trout- and graylingfishing ins't very good before then anyway. Truth be told, a few of the rivers do provide some decent fishing already in March, but that's a no-go!

Anyway, that's not really what I want to talk about today - so now to something completely different: April and May are good months, and in June, we get the big hatches of E. danica etc, and then from June 16th, when the E. danica-hatch is still good, and fishing is getting interesting with selective fish, you get the situation in today's PoD!

Our rivers and streams are not reserved for (fly)fishermen - everyone has a right use the rivers and the nature surrounding them. However, one thing is that a passing canoe (or 7) puts "my" fish down, but another all together more serious issue is that only a few rivers in Denmark are suited for canoes. None the less, on a lot of small, intimate strems (and upper sections of the bigger ones) are open to canoe-sailing, and the wear and tear on the rivers is obvious.

Canoes across gravel beds used for spawning, canoes sailing into the bank, paddles plowing through ranunculusbeds and I could go on - that not good for the small ecosystem a stream represents.

I'm sure I have a solution - banning canoes pose a lot of problems. A lot of families, schools and friends get some nice experiences sailing down a river, and although there some parties acting like morons, they shouldn't be allowed to ruin it for the rest. But even the good canoe-sailers pose a problem.....

I think a good solution would be to restrict the canoes to the lower, wider parts of some of the rivers and to the lakes - and leave the small streams and upper section canoe-free!

Do you have the same problems in your own country?

Lars
