Thursday 19th February, 2009 Jamie Connolly is probably the best angler I have guided who is not involved in the flyfishing world commercially. He is real neat guy and a very talented angler. He is the son of Scottish comedian/superstar Billy Connolly who I have also spent a bit of time with on the river. One of my funniest moments on a river may well have been a “You had to be there” moment but I'll share it anyway... Fishing on the famous “Mohaka Hilton” block of the Upper Mohaka river in the Ahimanawa Ranges of the North Island of New Zealand, Jamie and I were finding the fishing tough. No fish were showing themselves as visible targets and blind fishing, whether with a dry or a nymph was proving pretty fruitless. I was at a loss and given Jamie's immense angling ability I couldn't even blame my client's ineptitude. Finally a “dink” took the nymph on the blind (a “dink” in those parts is anything under 18 inches... this was 12” if it was standing on tiptoes!). As the fish came near the net to be landed Jamie exclaimed... "Right, you hold it and I'll slap it... we'll let these fuckers know we're serious!!!"
But the best laugh I ever had was from Billy himself, sitting around a camp fire one night after a long day on the river. This one comment left me in side splitting convulsions for a long time... I was worried for a bit I may never take another breath. Billy fishes to get away from people as much as to catch fish, in fact I often just left him alone casting in a pool and if I found a fish nearby would tell him but was often just told to bugger off and let him be. He doesn't get much time alone, finds casting medative and enjoys his alone time. I leave him to it when I can. As both Billy and I share a love of country music and Billy especially the old time stuff, we'd often Jam on Guitars in the evenings... it's some of my fondest memories of guiding as I've been a fan of his since I was young... I would often enjoy a drink or two and a cigarette or 10 during these sessions but Billy has no vices these days other than to enjoy a good cigar from time to time. As we took a break between tunes, Billy enjoyed his Havana while I took another gulp or two of Cab Sav when Billy looked across the fire to me and said... “You know, when I smoke a cigar, Jamie says I look like a movie star” “Is that right Billy” I responded.... “Aye... Lassie having a shit!”
