Vikings might be used to seriously cold weather, but us Brits are made of much less manly stuff. Thanks to the sub-zero temperatures I've barely picked up a fishing rod since I got back from New Zealand six weeks ago, and the pressure's clearly getting to me – I've accepted an invitation to go back to Lough Corrib this year, the scene of some of my most dismal angling failures. I tell you this with some trepidation. Corrib is huge, cold, dangerous and largely unknowable to people who didn't grow up drinking its water. This time, though, I won't be messing around with any of those sodding mayfly things which have made me so miserable in the past. It's duckfly all the way this year, which is interesting because while I have no bloody idea what a duckfly actually looks like, I do at least know that a) it's some kind of buzzer and b) I sometimes kid myself that I know how to catch trout on buzzers. So how bad can it be? Answers on the usual postcard... Meanwhile, I'm tying north country spiders, for no particular reason other than that I can. (Actually, that's not strictly true – I can't tie the Dark Needle because I still can't find any Pearsall's 6b. I'm not unaccustomed to seeking out vanishingly rare and interesting substances, but this one really has me stumped. And I don't have any magpie herl either. Bugger). Tomorrow I'll be tying heather flies, assuming I can find a decent pattern. Any ideas? You know what to do. Next week: perversions!
