Ronan's report

Wednesday 12th November, 2008

Last night some of my steelhead-crazy buddies and I got together for a fly tying session. Our motives were threefold - to celebrate the return of the dark and rainy winter (or mourn the end of the sunny dry summer), to share some laughs, lies, tunes, and beers, and to get serious about the business of filling our boxes with big ugly winter steelhead flies.

It's a long winter here on the northern half of the big blue and green ball. Group tying sessions are great fun, and if you haven't taken part I urge you to organize one soon. It's terrific to see different tying styles, pick up a few tips and tricks, experiment with new materials, and swap theories on fly design. It's also fun to drink beer, tell fishing stories, and listen to some old school gangsta rap with your friends.

Be forewarned however, as you may take some ribbing from your significant other or non-fishing friends. Fly tying night is only a few hooks and a bottle of Chardonnay away from being an arts and crafts party.

Fish on,
