Wednesday 30th July, 2008 Hi everyone! It’s Mimi, filling in for Matt, since he and Niall are off chasing dreams and hooking on to those shiny Canadian fighters. I came away with inspiration and questions, while on the recent trip to Central Oregon for the Pacific Northwest Sexyloops Gathering. First of all, the colorful volcanic scenery, clear snow melt waters and choosey fish were the materials of future artwork. Secondly, spending time in a group of like-minded people was valuable. Talk about learning in the field. I enjoyed soaking up tips and knowledge on the water. The water classroom made it easy The sign of a good trip is when you leave wanting to know more. Mysteries stayed with me after watching (and not catching) the huge brook trout of Lake X. After hours of rowing and casting on that lake, and gawking while watching those beasts swim the aquarium waters below, it occurred to me that we folk above water, in the boat, were doing the same thing. Brook trout gangs down below – Sexyloops fisher gang above – all separated by the surface tension of sky meeting clear, cold water. We flock in our respective groups because it works for us. Some days we feed, other days a stalemate. Some days we figure the game out, some days it is a “research” day. Thank you to Justin, Rob, Matt and Eric for your laughter and companionship. Eric captured a beautiful image of us on Lake X and it sparked an art idea. Birds of a feather flock together. I’ve wanted to paint the group of fishing birds and saw this as a humorous opportunity. I switched out Matt for the osprey, Rob as the heron and I’m in there dually (at the oars as eagle and, I had to stick in my alter ego, the kingfisher ?). It is a joy to create art that makes people smile and chuckle. I know I do when I create it. So, thank you to my friends who inspired me to create this image. Here is a toast to lighthearted fun, mysteries of the clear waters and members of the flock. Mimi
