Hello all. When Matt asked me to write for Sexyloops, I realized what an honor this would be. I admire what you all have accomplished and contribute to this arena and I am learning much. I have known Matt for nearly a decade and have always admired his angling and casting skills. We realized that we first met exactly 9 years ago today at a fishing pullout in Yellowstone Park. Our friendship was sealed over his random act of kindness in giving me a bright "Purple Showgirl" fly he had tied.

Recently, I marveled at the Spey casting masters at the Sandy River Spey Clave and got to thinking about the pursuit of creating beautiful lines. I watched lines that moved with efficiency, distance and purpose and realized these wizards of the Spey world make it look easy because they have spent time thinking and practicing their art.

Strike – a connection between casting and art.

I am a single handed, 6 weight kind of gal (for now), schooled on Yellowstone waters, and a professional artist. I realize that in fishing and art we are all following the same dream: to hit a point where experience, situation, muscles and memory fuse together and we come to create the perfect lines. Whether these lines are aerial, set on water or painted on canvas or wood, we live for the days when it all comes together and we nail it. It is magic when you feel every fiber in your body has cooperated and look, a perfect cast. It is magic when the wild grey matter finally settles down and creates new art. Both feats take time, experience, thought, mess-ups and the open willingness to be a student for a while. But after we’ve paid our dues, my, are the rewards sweet.

I have just completed a series of large trout paintings on pine panels to dress up my friends' fly shop in Montana. The hours spent wood burning and painting these signs were a meditation on lines. There are few things more pleasing than the powerful and graceful lines of fish. I see my fishes' lines in our aerial fly lines and draw inspiration from both. After sketching and wood burning in the darkest areas, I tint the body with acrylic paints. I want to preserve the pine grain and coax the fish from the natural surface. It is my hope that the visitors to West Yellowstone, get caught by these big fish and take the time to learn for themselves about the pursuit of beauty in casting a lovely line and finding their own graceful fish at the end of these lines, alive and full of fight.

This big grayling is a tribute to the Loopers who offered inspiration through their photos over on the board.

Thanks for your vim, vigor, and enthusiasm, Sexyloopers. May you cast long and prosper.

I hope everyone enjoyed today's surprise guest FP & POD artist. I'm out recovering from wisdom teeth surgery. Back next Wednesday when my face gets smaller.

Cheers,
Matt

PS - If you believe that wild & native steelhead are worth protecting, and that without solid science conservative fisheries management is the only answer, please, take a moment to sign the petition in support of the existing regulations that prohibit killing wild steelhead on Oregon's Umpqua River. Over 800 have already signed online and who knows how many more have signed the paper copies.
