Ronan's report

Thursday 29th May, 2008

So today we (Miss SL and I) are looking for a place on the Lake Balaton which will be centre of Hungarian operations for the next month or so - and possibly the one after, depending on how much time we spend in Croatia. And no I don't consider it “looking for houses”, more “looking for Asp” - nothing is permanent, or real for that matter.

Since I've talked so much about Asp and Hungary there is lots of interest in these fishes, and not surprisingly because they're great fun to catch - they fight hard, the takes are dramatic and you can catch them off the top.

It reminds me very much of Stillwater fry feeders in fact. They often hunt in packs and although the activity isn't to the same degree, it does appear to occur over a much more extended season. It's happening now for example. In fact NOW is one of the best times I'm told.

We don't have Asps in the UK. In Germany they call them Rapfen - and they have them there. Here in Hungary they call them Balin and they have them here too, and they may be bigger.

Now there's a bunch of things I really want to try on these fish, and living on the shores of the “Hungarian Sea” should give me the flexibility to try different methods and at different times, from subsurface swing tactics to the floating fry - hell I may even try Boobies, you know, for the hell of it. I haven't sorted out a boat yet but I'm working on it...

But I now have a car over here - a Suzuki Jimny, FFS, the smallest 4 by 4 on the planet - which belonged to my sister before she decided to become a war correspondent - she's now in the Congo trying to start one. I'm not quite sure what we're going to do with it, but I'm certainly going to paint it. I may do Camo or Zebra Safari. Perhaps the one-half-Medusa-other-half-Mona-Lisa bonnet (symbolising womanhood), or maybe I'll paint it so it looks like a Big Asp.

Talking of which, if you fancy driving your sister's car from Scotland to Hungary, beware the Sat Nav, which will take you through Slovenia and Croatia just to surprise you and you'll run out of fuel 3 miles before your destination.

Right back to Asp.

Peter and I went Asping on the Danube this week and Peter thinks he caught an Asp bigger than mine. But he was further away from my Asp than his one, and so his sense of perspective was skewed. From my end, my asp looked bigger. Peter's ass is of course much bigger than mine from any perspective - there's no denying that. You can read more about Peter in this exciting and informative thread.

Tomorrow we hope to open a new forum on the Board. You'll love it.

Cheers,
Paulski
