Ronan's report

Sunday May 25th, 2008

The other thing we'll be after on this trip, besides pike, is what North Americans call lake or Mackinaw trout, among a dozen other names. In northern BC, we called them char - which is what they are, not trout - salvelinus namaycush to you latin speakers out there. The big lakes around Burns Lake had them, although I only caught one, and that was through the ice on Francois Lake about thirty years ago. I lived beside Francois lake for a few years and we were always looking for something to do in the winter, which is about six months long. Anyway, ice fishing sure beats sno-golf. We didn't really target lakers back then, mostly because they run so deep in the summer, so they were left to the downrigger boys.

We're timing this Saskatchewan trip to hit the lake just after ice-out. We reckon we'll hit it bang on, too. The guys are keeping an eye on the melt and it's creeping northwards daily. At ice-out, as I mentioned before, the lakers are in shallow water, close to shore. We don't really know why, but it is either to hunt baitfish or for oxygen after the lake turns over. Whatever the reason, after ice-out they are accessible to the fly rod for a short while before they return to deep water. The laker isn't really a fly rod fish, for mostly that reason.

The lake char is maybe not the gamest fish but they run big, so that's always interesting. I like the idea of wading and fishing to them on the drop-offs. The only forage fish in the lake, we understand, is the lake whitefish, so as well as big colourful pike attractors I've also been working up some whitefish patterns. Other than that, I don't know much about fly fishing for them. I reckon I'll just fish for lakers the way I'd fish for any big predator. If any of you have any experience fishing for these things with a fly rod, why not step up and post about it on the board?
