Ronan's report

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

Yes, it's that time of year where it's so damned hard to choose, but as the Danica-hatch is drawing *very* close, I'm focusing on the rivers these days - yesterday as well

There were no Danicas (well, yes, there was one :-), but other mayflies hatching and also a massive hatch of small segdes (app. #16). The fish were hard to catch - the few risers we found had chosen difficult spots and they were strangely selective.

Anyway, one fish made me dig out an old, special fly that I keep in my box for exactly this kind of situation. I first really learned about the fly about 10 years ago, maybe 12. I was in a small stream (in Denmark), which very clear together witha good friend. We were each scouting a bend in the river when my friend suddenly said that a school of big grayling was crusing downstream towards me - they had just passed him.

The bend I was in was very deep and the fish chose to stop there and stay there :-). I tried dapping different nymphs down on them, but to no avail. My friend then suddenly said, "Haven't you got a Europea 12?". I thought he was kidding - an age old French creation that I knew well but had never fished. But he kept on and said that the fly has some strange ability to bring of deep holding fish. Anyway, I had none and left the school untouched.

Now, my friend is an extremely good flyfisherman, and I tied up a batch of E-12's. They sat in my box for a long time, and I had completely forgotten about them, until one day when I again faced a school of grayling right below in the same river!

I remembered my friends words and tied on an E-12, and the first cast brought up the biggsest grayling, and 3 more followed before the rest scattered. Since then, I've used the fly in the same situation, and again yesterday, it proved extremely effective. A single rise on the opposite bank, clearly a good fish and it never showed itself again. One cast with the E-12, and job done :-).

So, even though it was invented by Ragot in France some time in the 1950'ies I think, it's still a fly that I would never be without. I haven't got a picture of one of my own as they are lying at work, but here's one by a fellow Danish tier over at Hans Weilenman's site.

Get ready for the Danicas :-)
