Ronan's report

Saturday 10th November, 2007

Face it, fly fishing is not all about catching fish.

I read somewhere in the past a quip about the natural progression of the fly angler.

Stage 1 - you want to catch a fish
Stage 2 - You want to catch a lot of fish
Stage 3 - You want to catch a bug fush
Stage 4 - You want to catch lots of bug fush
Stage 5 - You are there for the experience, fish or no fish.

(I also recall the definition of fly-fishing as 'a jerk on one end of the line awaiting a jerk on the other', but feel the above is a tad more poetic)

What is fly-fishing to me? Well I believe in the fifth stage, and find I enjoy meeting up with others and having a social stroll along the riverbank or throwing a loop or two on the grass almost as much as getting out there and going hardcore. Don't get me wrong, you gotta love the feel of a lively fish on the other end of the line, but in adopting this relaxed approach I find that adverse conditions or tough days just don't bother me as much anymore. “Its called fishing, not catching”. I hate hearing this when guiding, but I guess it's the truth.

For some it's a welcome release from the everyday stresses of work, whilst for some its an escape from the family, friends or other commitments. For me, I guess I just like being on the river, where all the cares of the world just slip away like a sparkling riffle dispersing into the glistening pool below. Why replace one stress with another, just go with the flow I say and enjoy every moment upon the water.

For trout do not care who you are, what you do for a crust or how much of that crust you command. They are simple creatures, with simple requirements; you present that fly, and if it looks interesting, he will accept your offering, whether male or female, young or old, rich or poor. They care little for your past or where you may be in the future. Who your friends are or what you know. They are just a simple creature, living in a beautiful environment, and we as fly fishers are privileged to visit and enjoy their world for all it is worth.

So next time on the river take a step back to look around, and appreciate the sport we have chosen to participate in. It's not all about catching fish, but it sure helps!
